Jan Havicksz. Steen was born in Leiden in 1626 and died in Leiden on January 1rst 1679. Painter.
He was educated at a Latin school and enrolled at Leiden University, but never graduated. He is said to have been an apprentice of Nicolaus Knupfer, Adriaen van Ostade and Jan van Goyen.
He painted at huge number of works, especially of cheerful people having fun. He also painted portraits and historical scenes.
Jan Steen was the son of a brewer and to augment his income he started a brewery in Delft and opened a tavern at his house.
He was buried in St. Pieter’s church in Leiden.
